 Travel Documents

Entry requirements for Americans:  United States passport holders must have a valid passport. A visa is not required for stays of up to 180 days, if holding a Tourist Card/FMT form issued free of charge by airlines, embassies and at border crossings. Business travelers do not require a visa for up to 30 days if holding a FMN form. All US citizens traveling to and from Mexico by air are required to have a passport.  The requirement will be extended to include all land and sea border crossings as well. Passport/Visa Note: All visitors must hold a tourist card (FMT form), which is issued free of charge and obtainable from airlines, Mexican Consulates, Mexican international airports and border crossing points.E

Children under the age of 18 need a notarized letter from both parents to be able to enter Mexico. If they are with one parent, they need that letter from the other parent.

All guests will be issued a tourist visa which is a piece of paper with red letters on it. These are typically provided by your travel agent, available at airport check-in, and/or handed out on incoming flights. Do not loose this card. You may be fined if you arrive at the airport without it on your departure.

 What to Bring

Your Cozumel Vacation Home will have everything you need for your home life. You need to bring some warm-weather clothes. Bathing suit, T-shirts, shorts, sun dresses, and maybe a pair of pants are all you'll wear. Men may like to wear closed shoes for evening dinners. You will need to bring your own snorkel gear and diving equipment if you have it. If not, you can rent it here. We recommend you bring your own reading material. You can find a few English books and magazines but supply is limited. Bring your own cameras, film, sunscreen, and other common American products. In the winter months, you may choose to bring a sweater or windbreaker for chilly nights. Some guests bring their favorite American munchies, although many are available here (not to mention the delightful local specialties). Although most homes have stereo systems, some of them don't. Please ask in advance so that you may bring your own boom-box for your listening pleasure if the home you chose does not. We do not have music systems available for rental. Feel free to bring your own CDs.  All in all, you will be able to find most things you need to make your vacation stay comfortable.

 Airport Arrival

We would like to know your arrival time in advance. Check in for most homes is 3pm but you are welcome to leave your luggage while we finish getting the house ready. Once you arrive at the airport, go to the airport ground transportation ticket counter and get one ticket for each guest.  Show them the directions to the house if you need to let them know where to go.    Some owners chose to have guests go directly to the house to meet the host.  For reservations in these homes, we will send you detailed directions to the house after your final payment.

The cost for the airport transportation is about  $8 US per person and is subject to change at any moment. It is not included in the rentals.

 Ferry Arrivals

Where the Ferry Docks

Many visitors fly directly into Cancun. There are several ways to get to Cozumel from Cancun.  The additional trip on the bus to Playa del Carmen, and then the ferry to Cozumel will sometimes save you thousands of dollars.  It adds less than about 3 hours to your travel time.  For directions to get to Cozumel for Cancun airport, click here.

Many visitors fly directly into Cozumel.  Major airlines and private charters fly into Cozumel and Cancun.  Aerocaribe flies to Cozumel , Cancun, and back all day long.

Our host will meet you at the airport in Cozumel.  Please make sure we have your arrival time as well as your airline and flight time.

Your travel time will increase if you arrive in Cancun.  You will need to take a bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and then across on the ferry. Some travel agents will arrange this for you when you make your flight arrangements. There are commercial buses similar to Greyhound buses with air-conditioning with video/sound system that usually show a documentary about the Mayan people, or short clips of comical entertainment.  A nice relaxing drive is a good start for your first day of vacation and gives you time to take in the surroundings and encounter the hospitailty of the Mexican people.

Once you get to Playa del Carmen, you need to get on the passenger ferry that takes you to Cozumel. There is a ferry almost every hour of the day. Be sure to get the "Mexico" ferries, and not the yellow ferries.  (Those are reliable but slow).  The "Mexico" ferries are catamarans that are air-conditioned. Some of them offer outside sitting areas.  You might see some sea life on the ride to the island.  The fastest ferry is the "Mexico V", although the other "Mexico" ferries take less than an hour.  The first crossing is at 4:00 a.m. and the last is at 11:00 p.m. Please check the schedule on the website as it is subject to change without my notice.  Pick up a schedule to keep with you for your return at the ticket counter where you purchase your ticket.
Schedule Changes since Wilma:  The ferries are not running off the regular schedule right now. There are printed tables at the ticket counters that show the termporary schedules as they occur.

Arrive in Cozumel.  The ferry pier is located in the heart of downtown Cozumel.  Walking off the ferry pier, guest can cross the street and find themselves in a lovely typical Mexican "plaza".  This popular street is called "El Malicon" but its real name is Avenida Melgar. (It runs from the North side of the civilized area of the island to the southern point.  The paved road continues to the other side and then cuts back towards town along the mid point of the island).   Follow the instructions you've been sent to go directly to the house.

For emergencies, please call (987) 872-2078 in Cozumel or (918) 747-8160 in U.S.A.

Cozumel Orientation

Each home we market has its own management and hosting service. You will be issued keys, a give you a Cozumel map.  We suggest you book your vacation fun in advance planning all the tours, diving, snorkel, dune buggy tours in advance.

Check out our website www.Cozumelhomes.com so you can see the things you must do and must see and be assisted in organizing your vacation fun. Snorkel adventures, diving experiences, Maya ruins and/or eco-tours, and car rentals — you name it,we can arrange it.

The "must do" things in Cozumel include scuba diving or snorkeling, and most of all, the "Dune Buggy Tour"-do this the first day.  Try to book everything in advance. You can do it on my website.

The Dune Buggy Tour is the best all around orientation of the island.  It takes you through town, to the other side and around the southern point of the island.  The tour guides are well experienced and have a lot if information about Cozumel and the surrounding area.  We recommend this tour at the beginning of your stay so you get the best orientation of the island!

 Maid Service

We have several maids on our staff and although some homes have the same maid all the time, others have different maids at different times. Some of the maids on our staff have been with us for years. All of them are trustworthy, reliable, and efficient.

Your maid will arrive six days per week and is off one day and certain Mexican national and religious holidays. She is responsible for keeping the house neat and clean, providing clean linens, and general housekeeping chores. She has a program to follow and assigned jobs. Things like washing personal clothes, ironing, and babysitting are not part of her responsibilities. If you need a babysitter, cook, or other service, please pre-arrange this with us in advance.

For clothing care such as laundry or ironing, please see the Laundry section in Optional Services.

Please see the Tips section for our tipping recommendations.

 Cozumel Vacation Homes Contact

We will give you the contact information needed for the management company who takes care of the home you rented.  Please check your confirmation documents for these numbers and names.  Each home we work with has a representative here on the island that can take care of anything that should come up.

 Tips

We usually recommend about a ten dollars per week for each guest that the maid took care of. This is completely at your discretion. If she performed her duties well and you were happy with the service, this is a nice way to let her know. If she did special favors for you, then a little extra would be nice. Please don´t give maids gifts such as clothes, electrical supplies, or items besides money. This has caused a great deal of confusion in the past and we would like to avoid that.

 Lost and Found

Please leave everything that you found at the house where you found it. Many owners and guests leave things and expect them to be there when they return. Please let us know if you are missing anything as soon as you realize it's missing. If you find something that is valuable, please take it to someone in our office. We do not take responsibility for lost items but we'll happily help you look for anything misplaced.  Please don't bring valuables that are not insured.

 Jungle Dune Buggy Tours

Optional Services of Cozumel Vacation Homes

Most of the services you may wish to take advantage of are offered by CVH and staff. We have listed some of the most common service requests we get from guests. If there is anything else we can assist you with, please mention it to us and we will try to help.

Buggy, Jeep, and Car Rental

We can arrange for the rental of Jeeps, Trackers, or four door sedans.  We reserve Cozumel’s hottest new mode of eco-friendly transport, the Buggy — a dune-buggy-like vehicle modified for maximum comfort and convenience for the Dune Buggy tour.  If you are interested in driving one, you should book the tour for you and your family!

Arrangements can be made for a rental vehicle during your orientation at your Vacation Home, shortly after arrival. The vehicle will be delivered to your home promptly.  We recommend you book all car rentals in advance.
Call 866 396-4230 or email Info@Cozumelhomes.com.

Scooter and Bicycle Rental

Getting around Cozumel is easy and swift, because nothing is far away. Taxis are easy to get as there are hotels and taxi stands scattered through out the town.

Scooters are highly recommended as long as you know how to drive one well, and are not going to be drinking alcohol.   You need to be a serious driver.  These moto cycles may be fun and are the easiest way to get around the downtown area.   Guests must be especially careful because the condition of the roads and character of other drivers are different.

FREE DELIVERY
We can have a nice scooter delivered to your home for only $175 per week including insurance. The best part about scooter rentals is that they are easy to park in the downtown areas where it is normally HARD or impossible to park a car.  There are many pedestrians, many animals, and things to watch out for.  As long as guests are responsible and careful, this is the best way to get around.  Reserve one in with the home rental and you can have them waiting for you at the house.

We offer the best rate of $175 per week.

Just remember, don't drink and drive and always wear your helmet.   Reserve one - email me to reserve one.  Free delivery to your hotel.
Call me at 866 396-4230 to make your reservation.

Tours and Excursions -To see complete tour list and make online reservations, click here.

For a truly unique excursion to the remote northern part of Cozumel Island, check out Jungle Dune Buggy Tours!  This is the "must do" tour that we recommend to all our guests.  The dune buggies are packed and ready to take you to the best adventure that Cozumel can offer (above water).  This day includes white sand beaches, pristine coral reefs, and ancient Mayan ruins, as well as Mexican picnic food, and cold Mexican beer.  We provide the snorkel equipment too, although you are welcome to bring your own.  This is the best island tour and last all day. Tour begins at 10:30 am at the Rentadora Isleña, and returns to town about 4:30 p.m.  A great adventurous day...not for the faint of heart!

A trip to Tulum is magical. And Xel-Ha National Park has magic of its own. You can easily visit both in a perfect day trip with our Tulum & Xel-Ha Adventure.

There are two options a visitor can take to get to the mainland. Both are efficient and easy.  You can get there by ferry or airflight.

AeroCozumel and AeroCaribe fly to Cancun, Merida, and Mexico City daily. The cost is from $30-80 (price subject to change).

There are also tour packages that offer a one-day trip to Chichen Itza .

There is a modern waterjet catamaran that will take you to Playa Del Carmen in about 50-60 minutes. It is an air-conditioned passenger-ferry. Refreshments and video are offered on board.

Once you get to the mainland, transportation is no problem. In Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, you can find car or jeep rentals, buses, and taxis. You can rent a taxi for the day. Discuss the price with the driver before getting into the car. This option makes it easy to get around and have your own personal tour-guide. Most drivers are happy to point out the sites, give recommendations, and wait in a pre-designated place. One advantage to this option is that you can drink and not worry about driving.

From Playa Del Carmen, you can visit Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Xcaret, Tulum, Xel-Ha, Akumal, Playa Aventuras, Xcacel, Paamul, Chemuyil, Coba, or the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. You should choose which direction to venture into before going. We recommend that you spend as much of your time as possible in Cozumel and save the mainland for a separate trip/vacation. But if you don't plan to be in this region again, or if it's your first time here, the trip to Chichen Itza is a trip not to miss. You can't come all this way and not see Chichen Itza.

To plan your trip, we can assist you. Let us know how many plan to go and how you want to travel. We can make your reservations.  Go directly to our tours webpage to book directly.

 Diving and Fishing Trips

Cozumel is recognized as one of the top diving areas in the world, offering miles of coral reefs that are ideal for snorkeling and divers from novices to the most advanced. It has breathtaking drop-offs for the experienced diver. Diving is best in summer when visibility often exceeds 200 feet. While diving is highly recommended for the qualified, snorkeling is recommended for everyone who can swim.

To plan your diving, e-mail Info@CozumelHomes.com.

Click here to see a map of Cozumel with major reef systems indicated.

Paraiso Reef North: There are a series of three inshore reefs which lie just north of the International Pier and run parallel to the shore. They are approximately 200 yards off the beach and can be reached either by boat or by swimming from the shore. Diving depths range from 30 to 50 feet and these lovely reefs are loaded with star corals, brain corals, gorgonians, seafans, sponges, and myriad fish.

Plane Wreck: Located 100 yards directly out from the La Ceiba Hotel Pier is a 40-passenger Convair airliner lying upside down on a white sand bottom. You can see the entire plane from the surface. The wreck is situated at the north of the Paraiso Reef formations. Be careful not to get snagged in one of the several ropes and lines attached to the plane.

Chankanaab Reef: Several hundred yards offshore and slightly south of Chankanaab Lagoon lies a medium-depth reef sometimes called Outer Chankanaab. Diving depths at this site range from 25 to 55 feet. The coral formations and marine life are similar to Paraiso reef and this spot is considered to be an excellent location for night diving.

San Francisco: Located directly out from San Francisco Beach is a quarter-mile-long coral reef which runs parallel to shore. It is a good half mile out and does require the use of a dive boat.

Palancar Reef: The reef most identified with Cozumel is actually a conglomeration of many different coral formations stretching for a distance of three miles. It's renowned for its towering buttresses. It lies about a mile offshore and has such a variety of profiles that it defies description. The north end of Palancar is generally shallow with the tip of the wall starting at 50 feet. The face of the wall is more of a slope. Excellent areas for diving include The Horseshoe and Palancar Gardens. Local divers have recently installed a large religious statue on the bottom of Palancar. To really see Palancar, you'll need to take many, many dives there. You'll really enjoy it.

Colombia Reef: It's one of the great coral buttress areas located along the lip of the dropoff toward the southern end of the island. There are canyons, deep ravines, huge overhangs, and tall pinnacles. Many creatures, especially the larger ones such as sea turtles, groupers, and big jacks are often seen. The three-dimensional relief of Colombia is second to none in the world.

Maracaibo Reef: Situated off the southern tip of Cozumel, Maracaibo Reef is considered Cozumel's most challenging and most exciting reef. Strong currents on the surface make this a drift dive.

Santa Rosa Wall: Regarded as the second-most popular reef, the wall has a drop-off that begins at 70 feet and drops straight away into the abyss. There are huge overhangs of stony corals along the top of the reef which are beautifully decorated with translucent vase sponges, elegant tube sponges, and other types of colorful sponge growth.

There are many additional reefs that will prove fascinating to you. All are considered excellent dive sites by Caribbean standards (which are among the highest in the world). Most important of all is the fact that all of the reefs are now protected by Mexican Law and will be preserved forever...

Divers are reminded that coral is protected in Cozumel and should not be collected. Spear gun fishing is prohibited as well. Most shells underwater have life so leave the shells where you find them.  It's a beautiful world down there. let's keep it that way.

Message from
the Scuba Divers Association of Cozumel

The diving association of Cozumel, in conjunction with government authorities, notify that by law it is forbidden to dive any closer to the reef than one meter. In order to prevent irreparable damage, do not break coral structures, kick or grab gorgonians, or drag gauges. Control your buoyancy! Please help the reefs survive our generation. Pass the word!

Isabel Hernandes Alonso and Simone Rossini have written a wonderful book called Cozumel Mexico Coral Reefs. It's beautifully illustrated with color photographs and is filled with a wonderful overview of the island, climate, and wildlife. They dove with Ricardo Madrigal many months, learning lessons that had taken him years to learn. Check out this book and get your own copy at our office. They are on sale for $25 US.

 Cook Service

We have a few Maya-Mexican cooks who each have lots of experience cooking for their large families. They are not trained chefs who fix Tex-Mex or elegant gourmet meals. The ladies are women who are accustomed to cooking in their homes, using the local condiments and produce. They prepare delicious treats from family recipes passed down through the generations. They cook the same good, healthy, homemade meals which they usually prepare for their own families. We have created a wonderful menu based in their experience of what guests prefer the most of the many meals they have prepared. We have the best recipes for your palate.

Included in this meal plan is breakfast and dinner for everyone served anytime you wish. Most guests enjoy an 8:00 am breakfast and then dinner at about 7 or 8 pm. Lobster and shrimp are expensive and not offered as part of this meal plan. If you wish to have shrimp or lobster, you will be charged the full charge of $30 per day as usual plus the charge of the lobster or shrimp. We provide two or three beers or cokes per person for each dinner. We don´t provide all the beer you can drink for the day, but we deliver. If you would like us to deliver more beer, we are happy to do so at cost plus a 20% service charge for the purchasing and delivery. If you had a good catch at fishing, we can have the cook prepare it for you for the same cost as the regular cook service plan.

Telephone Service

Cozumel has recently upgraded their phone service. Most of our homeowners have graciously provided phone service for guests. We ask you to please respect the guidelines outlined here. These phones are for local calls only. We ask that you not make direct long distance phone calls. If you have an ATT calling card or MCI calling card, please follow the instructions for usage. We ask that you not make 800 calls because they are not toll-free from Cozumel.

All local calls used to begin with "2" plus four digits. On July 15, 1999, Cozumel added the prefix "87" to all local phone numbers. Many publications about Cozumel still list all phone numbers without the 87, so just add it to the beginning of all five digit phone numbers.  You will need 7 digits to dial a Cozumel number.

To make collect calls, and receive additional information through a bilingual operator, please dial 090 for an international operator.  Collect to the states are very expensive.  We don't recommend it.

MCI

To make MCI World Service, the access code is 001-800-674-7000. If you have a MCI calling card, the MCI Access Code is 01-800-021-8000.
