Generally speaking, Americans are familiar with the names Cozumel, Cancun, Mayan Riviera, etc, but where are they? Let's look at some maps, each one zooming in closer and closer.
The map below, show the southen part of the United states, easily recognizable by the Florida peninsula and the expansive Texas, on the left of the Gulf of Mexico. The island south of Florida is Cuba. The Gulf of Mexico is the large body of water between the mainland of Mexico, and the coast of the US, including Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.
Mexico is the country directly south of the United States, bordering in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
Mexico is formed like a mermaid tail, with one large mass in the middle, and a land mass that comes up and around towards the East, called the Yucatan Peninsula, dividing the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The eastern shore has a long skinny peninsula, south of California, called Baja California.
South of Mexico, lies Belize, and English speaking colony that has grown to be a resort for vacationers.

The water to the right of the land, is the Caribbean seas. The island of Cozumel is the tiny island to the right (east) of the Yucatan Peninsula, in the Caribbean Sea.

The next photo closes into the area that is called the Mayan Riviera. This area actually extends a little further north than is shown in the photo, as far as Isla Mujeres. The island just south of the center of the photo is Cozumel. You can see the proximity to Cancun, shown with a red dot further north of the main coast. This coastline is abundant with resorts, condominiums, unique tourist attractions. Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal are just a few of the many communities that have blossomed in the past twenty years.

Map of Cozumel Island

The island of Cozumel
The lower photo shows Cozumel, as it is situated to true north. The northern half of the island, is swampland. Developers worked hard to create a beautiful world class golf course in the northern swamps. Private residences, and hotels have expandd on the coastline, along the northern half. The right side of the island has rolling waves, and hardly any development. There are a few really cool beach clubs to enjoy a fresh seafood lunch, cold beers, and a breathtaking view.
