Getting Around on Cozumel

Airportarrivea.jpg
The airport provides a bus service from the airport to your hotel or rental home. It is the only mode of transportation from the airport for arrivals unless you rent a car. The rate is aout $10 per person. The rate includes your luggage. Each vehicle will wait until it is full before it leave to take you to your hotel. So, while you wait, Jimmy Buffet's MargaritaVilla has opened up a stand for visitors to enjoy the brief wait.

Transportation

Taxis are easy to get. Just go outside and wave one down. There are many big hotels through out the island, so there are always taxis. You may also call one by telephone. The number is 872-0236 or 872-0041. If another taxi arrives before the one you ordered, he won’t take you because then the other taxi won’t have anyone to pick up. We usually just wait it out.

Car Rentals in Cozumel

Cozumel Cruiser — a dune-buggy-like vehicle modified for maximum comfort and convenience.  This dune buggy design was the first on the island, created in 1995. These are reserved for the Cozumel dune buggy tour.  They are used for the Cozumel Dune Buggy Tour and not available for rentals anymore. Of you like dune buggies, I recommend you take the tour. They will have the dune buggy all gassed up, filled with ice and cold drinks. You'll drive your own dune buggy and the tour guide will drive his. You'll follow him, making lots of stops, and see the island and all it has to offer.

Scooter Rentals A great way to travel in Cozumel-

Scooter transportation is a great way to get around San Miguel.  It is fun, economical and safe, if you are already efficient on a motor cycle. Cozumel is a great place to ride a scooter, but not a good place to learn.  Traffic in Cozumel is different than most American guests are used to.  As long as people are responsible, and not drinking alcohol, a few precautions can make scooter rental a breeze.  Mopeds are easy to park, easy to manage, and have plenty for storage under the seat.   This method of getting around can be fun!  Be safe, and get around easily on a scooter.

Driving Tips

During your first minibus ride, you will notice that the flow of traffic is faster on the beachfront road, and that there are more pedestrians than in the USA. When you follow some simple rules, you will find driving very easy here.

Orienting yourself in Cozumel

The streets of Cozumel have been formed in a non-strict grid.  The main street is the beachfront road, which is called "El Malicon".  All the street parallel to the "Malicon" are named by fives; fifth, tenth, fifteen, etc.  The roads running north and south, begin thier names with the center road, called Benito Juarez.  The one south of it is called Adolfo Rosada Salaz.  These two streets run perpendicular to the beachfront road, and center the clock tower in the plaza.  All streets running parallel to these to the north, are even numbered streets, and those to the south, are odd numbered streets.

There is one road that goes across the island, and one road that surrounds the southern half of the island.

Gas Stations

There is only one petroleum company in Mexico.  'Petroleros Mexicanos' is Mexico's state-owned, nationalized petroleum company.  They accept cash only-no credit cards.  Watch your change and make sure the meter begins at zero.
Gas is sold in litres.  (One gallon=3.79 liters).
